Teaching Load
The
teaching load for an academic year consists of a total of 15 credits.
Generally this is split into 7 credits in one semester and 8
credits in the other. This is considered a normal teaching load
for the department.
Typically
tenured faculty all teach more than the normal load. For example,
recitation
sections for our introductory algebra based (PHYS 101, PHYS 102) and
calculus based (PHYS 103, PHYS 204) courses are always in addition to
the
normal load. Any teaching over the normal load is called an overload,
and extra money beyond the base salary is paid for this work. The
rate of pay for overloads is $809 per credit, where labs are paid as
1.5 credits per section and recitations (although zero credits for
students) are paid at one credit per section.
A
normal semester for tenured faculty consists of an amount of overload
that averages to about 6 - 8 credits. Usually two to four of
these are due to recitations, and the rest we do on top of the normal
load.
Summer Teaching Opportunities
Although
not mandatory or expected, faculty have the option in summer to teach
summer school. Summer sessions are done either in one of two six
week sessions (1=May & June, 2=July & August) or in one twelve
week session. Decisions about who teaches what are usually made
within the department in late fall. Pay for a given course is
determined by enrollment.
